The wargame, whose design and use cycle is illustrated, is an innovative tool for the management and development of Armed Forces officers in training, education, skills assessment, leadership style observation, and cultural and procedural integration. The book is an introduction to the world of wargaming for beginners, but also offers insights, unpublished material, and innovative proposals for professionals. In presenting the history, current, and potential uses of wargaming, it highlights current strategic challenges, with a focus on European defence and the Mediterranean. It also recounts a British Navy exercise, and it describes the functioning of military organisations, which are little known despite their size and widespread presence. The most important players, publishers, designers, and military institutions are presented, and the types of wargames and the purposes for which they are used are reviewed, from entertainment and management training to classified analysis within NATO. The book concludes with a call for greater use of wargaming in both the civil and military spheres and a wider dissemination of defence culture.
